My Eids has been always different every year. My childhood eid in bd was different every year due to moving around so much around different cities and different neighborhoods. The usual would be at my dad’s villages, or my mom’s small town, or the big cities I’ve lived in, like the capitol or the center.
My Eids at the villages were spontaneous, as the prayer and new clothes and village food began the day, while the rest of the day, time would be spent at the fair festivals where they sold priceless amounts of beautiful junks everyone went crazy about. By the end of the day, we would’ve gone to a different villagers house to celebrate the night and share a beautiful moon sighting at a breath taking nature landscape.
Small town eids were completely however, as so were the families. The modern idea of eid shared the traditions of new clothes, fancy food and visiting peoples house, as henna night, hanging out with friends around the town in rickshaw and collecting money from people were also a ritual. The people made differences though, as I had cousins who were selfish yet living. Jealous yet caring. Strange relationships among family and friends brought the joy of celebrating the occasion together.
The last eid in bd made a huge differences though. my father was arrested that night, front of my own eyes, while he was eating his first eid meal that night. Everything happened so dashing and unexpected, as the feelings that night was never felt ever before. 11 year old child horrified on that eid, that was my very last in bd as new life already was to begin.

Eids in usa isn’t the same thought. childhood is always being missed, tears are always being shed, expectations always ruined. First few eids were spent fatherless, as he worked on the day, since usa doesn’t recognize the event as a holiday. I spent the eid with kind but fake relatives, as they so called comforted us throughout the day. The other eids, i had to attend to school and pretend like i am a student while my mind contentiously left to bd or to relatives or to i don’t even know where to, because at a point, life brings so much disappointment, it doesn’t seem that bad to attend school on a Christmas day.

Eids with the father however is a different story, different drama and different shed of tear. Psychopath father has the intimacy to do whatever he wishes to do, while insult kids back like fire flames if anything is done against his wishes. I was lonely last eid, as the mother was a sick patient sleeping in a room where no visitors came, no one made a call, or no food was being served. New dresses didn’t bring much joy either, when loneliness was cured with sisters made cheesecake. I felt so sorry for my pathetic self that year, so hopeless.
Hope didn’t go away completely though. Eid was “fun” with the new sister and her married man. He drove s around, did what a typical brother in law would do, even if it was for the sake of fake sympathy. Cannot deny what I have enjoyed right?
This year’s eid, i don’t have much expectations. I am planing to invite everyone for the sake of Allah, sake of humanity and sake of unity, as the hatred and complex relationship is strong between the families. Every girl can dream, and this eid wouldn’t be perfect, but it is worth a try isn’t it?
